New physiotherapy tariff 2025 important changes for practices

From July 1, 2025, the new tariff structure for physiotherapy benefits in accident insurance (UV), military insurance (MV) and disability insurance (IV) comes into force. Find out what is changing for physiotherapists and patients here.

New collective agreement for physiotherapy from 2025

After more than 25 years without major adjustments, the tariff structure for physiotherapy benefits in the areas of accident insurance (UV), military insurance (MV) and disability insurance (IV) is being fundamentally revised. The new regulation comes into force on July 1, 2025 and entails far-reaching changes that affect both remuneration and billing and documentation.

The new structure is intended to represent physiotherapy services more fairly and ensure that different forms of treatment are adequately remunerated. At the same time, it is accompanied by new billing modalities and increased documentation costs. Physiotherapists therefore have the question of what is actually changing and how the changes are being felt in everyday practice.

Why was the tariff structure revised?

The previous tariffs were no longer in line with the reality of modern physiotherapy. In recent decades, new scientific findings, specialized treatment methods and digital developments have prevailed that were not taken into account in the previous tariff structure. At the same time, insurance companies and payers wanted more transparency and traceability in billing.

The new tariff was therefore designed to meet three key objectives:

  • Differentiated compensation: The previously often flat rate billing is being replaced by a more detailed tariff structure that better reflects the actual costs of individual treatments.
  • New treatment methods: Robot-assisted rehabilitation, medical training therapy (MTT) or telemedicine treatments receive their own billing codes and rules.
  • Clear documentation requirements: Reports to insurance companies, interdisciplinary case discussions and special forms of therapy are now more precisely defined.

The most important changes in the new 2025 tariff

1. More detailed billing for specialized therapies

To date, many treatments have been grouped under a general position. In the new structure, there are separate tariffs for specific types of therapy, such as:

  • Robot-assisted therapy for upper and lower extremities with fixed maximum times per day.
  • Hippotherapy, which, in addition to the actual treatment, also takes into account additional infrastructure costs.
  • Medical training therapy (MTT) with clear guidelines for introduction, re-evaluation and independent training units.

2. New supplements for certain types of treatment

The 2025 tariff structure now allows surcharges for special conditions. In this way, practices will be able to bill in the future if:

  • treatment takes place on Sundays and public holidays.
  • two therapists carry out a treatment at the same time
  • therapy takes place in the swimming pool and this results in additional infrastructure costs.

3. Introduction of teletherapy

In certain cases, physiotherapy sessions can also be carried out and billed via video telephony. This complements classic on-site therapy and offers patients more flexibility. There are clear guidelines:

  • Video treatments are possible but must ensure the same quality as a face-to-face session.
  • Telephone consultations can only be inked in exceptional cases.
  • Communication via email or chat is not recognized as treatment.

4. New requirements for documentation and reports

The billing of reports to insurance companies will be made more transparent in the future. Depending on the scope, there are different types of reports, which vary by page number or number of characters.

Interdisciplinary communication and case discussions with other experts are now also more precisely defined and can be billed under certain conditions.

Automatic integration into XatlaMed — no conversion required for practices

Many physiotherapy practices are wondering whether they need to manually adjust their billing systems to account for the new rate. If you use XatlaMed, you don't have to worry about that.

The new Tariff structure is automatically transferred to the system. That means:

  • No manual adjustment of tariff codes or billing rules.
  • All invoices will be made in accordance with the new requirements from July 1, 2025.

This makes the transition extremely easy for users. While many practices have to deal with new billing modalities with difficulty, XatlaMed customers can continue to bill smoothly.

What does the new tariff mean for everyday practice?

Adaptation brings both benefits and challenges. On the one hand, the more differentiated remuneration ensures fairer payment for physiotherapy services, on the other hand, documentation costs are increasing.

In particular, the new reporting regulations and the expanded billing options for interdisciplinary cooperation require a precise understanding of the new requirements. Anyone who is familiar with the new structure at an early stage can avoid errors and ensure that billing is carried out correctly.

Physioswiss is offering training in the coming months to accompany the introduction of the new tariff.

Conclusion: A major change with noticeable effects

The new tariff structure is changing a lot for physiotherapy practices. The differentiated remuneration ensures more accurate billing, while new billing options and documentation requirements require a change in everyday practice.

However, thanks to the automatic integration into XatlaMed, users don't have to worry about manual adjustments. The software ensures that all invoices comply with the new requirements from July 1, 2025, so that physiotherapists can continue to concentrate fully on their patients.

Anyone who familiarizes themselves with the new rules at an early stage and uses reliable billing software will easily master the changeover.
